Congressman Sabo Honored for Work In Support of the U.S. Coast Guard
Wednesday, September 20, 2006

Washington, D.C. – On Thursday, September 21, Congressman Martin Olav Sabo (D-MN) will receive the Navy League Recognition Award for dedicated service to the Coast Guard and the Congressional Coast Guard Caucus. John A. Penneton, President of the Navy League of the United States, will present the honor at a Capitol Hill reception that will include many members of Congress, the U.S. Coast Guard, and related organizations.

Congressman Sabo has had an important working relationship with the Coast Guard, especially because of his roles as the top Democrat on the Homeland Security and Transportation Appropriations subcommittees. Rep. Sabo has provided critical oversight and guidance on the Coast Guard’s “Deepwater” program to replace and upgrade the Coast Guard’s aging fleet, as well as many other programs.

“I am honored by the Navy League’s show of appreciation,” Congressman Sabo said. “With Hurricane Katrina, we were reminded how critical it is to have an effective Coast Guard. Beyond this, we rely on the Coast Guard to perform well every day with important missions like search and rescue, environmental compliance and enforcement issues.”

The Congressional Coast Guard Caucus is a bipartisan group that values a strong, well-equipped and properly trained Coast Guard that protects the coastal and inland waterways.

In March, Congressman Sabo announced his plans to not seek re-election. After serving 14 consecutive terms in the U.S. House of Representatives, Sabo will retire at the end of the year.
